The Inspection
On the whole, the weather had been temperamental lately. One minute, it was absolutely bucketing it down, and the next, it was bright sunshine. The amount of rain had turned the ground into a muddy mess, but at least the tents provided perfectly adequate shelter, and a gazebo had been erected over the community dining table to protect everyone from the elements.
Despite the temperamental weather, however, it had been fairly warm throughout the past two weeks, so the chill in the air during dinner that evening was particularly noticeable, even before the dark, hooded figure by the Ministry's representative's desk had been seen.
Nervously, the Ministry representative approached the table.
"I'm afraid we have a visitor," he said, addressing everyone at the table and hoping that anyone not there could hear him. "This is a Dementor, one of the Guards at Azkaban. It's a high security prison. He's just here to, well, ensure that a certain escaped criminal isn't hiding amongst you.
"I don't expect he'll be here for more than an half an hour, so do try not to worry too much. They can make people rather, well... uncomfortable."
Bowing his head slightly, he left the Outsiders to their meal.
[And so, a Dementor is lurking around the camp, just in case one of the Outsiders is secretly Sirius Black. They're known to sap the happiness out of the environment, and - in cases where there are true horrors in someone's past - cause traumatic memories to resurface.
The chilly, depressed feeling can be lifted by the deliciousness of chocolate, though the Outsiders will need to discover this on their own. Good thing there's dessert.]

[Tobias tilts his head a little, thinking strangely deeply about such a simple thing. His hand is automatically fidgeting with the bracelet again as he thinks, clearly some sort of tick or something.]
...I don't remember... what mine means.
[He shrugs a little at that, but with his fingers closed around the bracelet still, the separation of his hands comes with a dull click of the catch releasing itself and the bracelet coming off in his other hand.
Tobias' entire body goes rigid as he sucks in a breath that sounds somehow... odd, like someone mixed white noise from a radio in it. Instantly, the hand that the bracelet had been on disappears, melting into purple-colored 1s and 0s with flickering pieces of glitchiness and other unidentifiable things within it.
The red in his eyes becomes far more pronounced, giving off a sinister looking glow as the stoic expression morphs into something deeply eerie without changing much of the expression.
Ah.
It's a weak sound, and all that Tobias can manage to exhale.]

Vaati stared in horror at the changed boy, edging backwards slightly- he didn't like the look of the thing that had replaced Tobias' hand, he didn't want it anywhere near him if he could help it. So much for the conversation they'd been having....it had just led to another freak out, and it didn't look like one that could be fixed with a chocolate cake.
He didn't want to admit it, but Tobias now looked scary.]
no subject
The result is a physical struggle as much as a mental one, and Tobias ends up falling backwards, catching himself on the ground with his hands --
-- ground that is now slowly being consumed as his hand deletes what it's touching.
It's only the pressure of the unleashed power that keeps him from freaking out, but he manages to struggle the bracelet back on, making the glow and the hand disappear until he's back to as he was before it came off.
...Okay. NOW he can freak out.]
no subject
He didn't know what had shocked him more- the sudden change in Tobias, or the fact that he'd just stumbled back like a TOTAL IDIOT. He was a mage. He had MAGIC. And what had he done with it?
Nothing.
Tobias had just made parts of the ground disappear with little effort, though. It wasn't as if you saw a feat like that every day, even back in Hyrule.]
You'd...you'd better keep whatever that is a secret from the others...
[Gods, now HIS voice was shaking.]
no subject
Please... don't hate me... please... I didn't mean to...
[He can't even look at the wind mage, just whimpering his plea softly.]
no subject
Then again, he wasn't used to people not treaking him like a freak either.]
You'd have to do something REALLY bad to make me hate you that much.
[That, at least, had some truth in it. Although really, it wasn't that hard for Vaati to see something as 'really bad.']
Aaahhh that icon. <3
[Sorry, Vaati, he can't really understand what you're reflecting on. As far as he knows, just existing is a crime with no forgiveness, so he doesn't really "get" that others might not see it that way.]
it is a great icon
[If you did, that would've been an entirely different matter.
He smiled wanly at Tobias, deciding to hold out his hand this time. If he was actually attempting to be nice for once, he had better play the part well- and this boy and his strange power interested him a whole lot...]
So cute! (also Vaati you manipulative bastard)
He reaches up, closing both his hands on Vaati's one to stand.]
....Thank you....
no subject
Are you going to stick around here when that...thing is still with us? I'm not.
[Not unless there was any more chocolate cake.]
no subject
...I'll follow you.
[After all, maybe he knows where they can hide from the dementor...]

[Vaati gestured at the tents furthest to the south of the campsite, where his one stood. It had begun to rain again, but if they ran fast enough, they'd manage to avoid the worst of it.
Well, he could run fast. He had no idea about Tobias.]
Come on, we'll go this way so that desk guy doesn't try and stop us.
no subject
Skinny though he may be, speed is definitely one of his best traits -- he manages to keep up with the smaller male easily, tailing him a bit too closely as they head towards the tents.]
...Why did they... bring that here?
no subject
[...like said criminal would be able to hide in this place, with the amount of security placed on them...]
But he did say it would go after a while. I might just stay here, though
[By 'here', Vaati meant he was going to sit in his tent, where it was nice and warm. And maybe read a book. They'd given him a lot of books.]
no subject
...I hope they don't find him.
no subject
[Vaati wasn't really all that interested in his answer. He was sitting on the edge of his bed, flipping through a heavy book some witch from the castle had given him. Honestly, he had no idea what half of it was about- although there did seem to be spells involved, he couldn't do most of them without a wand, apparently. Or so he'd been told. He'd still managed to singe his bedcovers once, though.
When he looked up, he caught Tobias eyeing up the impressive pile of books and grinned. Picking up one of the lighter ones, he flung it towards the boy.]
no subject
[He seems oddly thoughtful about that, though that's... pretty much shattered when the book slams into the side of his head and causes him to jerk in surprise, blinking at Vaati, then looking down at the book on the floor.
He picks it up, turning it over in his hands and opening it... upside-down.]
....I can't read.
no subject
[He wasn't really paying attention but...what was that Tobias had said about the reading? He seemed older than Vaati, yet he couldn't read?
Hmmm.]
Agh, I didn't...think about that.
[Well, that WAS half true. He had just assumed this boy liked books from the way he was staring at them. Vaati rummaged through the pile and pulled out an ever thicker book- but instead of pages and pages of tiny text, it was full of colourful moving pictures. He'd had books like this back in Hyrule, but they were more for children, and he didn't think this one was.]
Here you go.
no subject
What was this?
He puts the other book aside, taking the thicker one from Vaati and flipping it open. It clearly -- and almost immediately -- snags Tobias' attention, a mystified look crossing his face as he watches the pictures move around with a smile that seemed to cement him further in that "child" mindset.]
Wow...
no subject
[Vaati spared one moment of his attention to point out the page with the dragons, then turned back to his book. But reading about jinxes and hexes wasn't holding his attention for once, so he slammed the book shut and dropped it back onto the pile. Tobias' excitement was kind of infectious.]
I wonder when we'll actually be allowed into the castle...
[....imagine all those books....]
no subject
...Look like Charizard, kind of...
[Still, he's flipping through it in glee, making random comments on how some of the monsters look like other Pokemon he knows.]
I don't know... I'm kind of scared...
no subject
I'm looking forward anyway.
[For the library, at least. Sighing, he glanced at the clock that was perched next to his bed- it was WELL past the time the dementor should have left, and dinner normally finished earlier than that.
Yet he couldn't hear anything from outside.]
Huh. No one seems to be coming back to the tents...
[Maybe tonight would be quiet, for once.]
no subject
He glances up a couple times when Vaati speaks, going back to the picture book single-mindedly until he gets about halfway through. He glances towards the entrance of the tent himself, shrugging a little.]
...I don't mind. I like it being quiet. I'm... not used to a lot of people...
no subject
You're not, are you? That's one thing we have in common then.
[WELL. It wasn't like he wasn't used to people, more like he'd gone so far out of his way to avoid them in the past that he'd forgotten how to deal with them, mostly. A situation like this he was ok with- Tobias only spoke to Vaati when spoken to first, and like he said, he liked the quiet....
...quiet...
It was way too quiet.]
I'm... going to go out and check anyway.
[Maybe he was just overreacting?]
