First Song: Weekend

[The first week of classes are over-and aside from a few incidents in Potions, Mir has been cruising through without incident. There have been a few screams from the fifth-year girls room in the dungeon, but nothing too bad. Life is pretty good-and pretty dull. So in the interest of spicing things up, Mir is exploring the castle and the grounds today, instead of doing homework (already finished) or furthering her studies. After all, exploring the grounds is also a form of study, isn't it?

So many places to check out after all. Gotta climb all the towers, bother the paintings in front of the other House's dormitories, delve the dungeons, and walk up to the very edge of the area beaten out by the Willow.

Though, maybe she should have worn something a bit warmer than the dress she's picked. It's thin, it's gauzy, its got frills and bows, and it makes her look even paler and younger than she usually does. It is definitely not suited for the north of the British Isles, and she'll wind up shivering slightly in the wind when she ventures outside.]

[Ms. casual shorts here sees nothing wrong with the outfit, but she does look up from reading her Potions assignment (diligently, since she had trouble concentrating in class) outside to notice the girl sort of floating by.]

[Mir really doesn't see anything wrong with her mode of dress either-she just needs to increase the atmospheric containment elements of it. But, let's be clear here, she is not just floating. Floating implies that someone is moving without purpose, and it should be clear after a bit that while Mir is relaxed and not terribly bothered by anything-she is anything at all but without purpose. She is in fact, 'casing the joint' as Ms. casual shorts' older brother might have noticed.

But, since he isn't here, she's much more likely to note and comment on identical hair stylings.]

[Fate hasn't picked up the Harlaown family deductive paranoia yet, it's true.]

[She is, however, starting to adventure with starting conversations herself.]

[Mir blinks at that, and turns to look at Fate.]

I didn't like it when I first got it...but it's grown on me since then. I've been meaning to get a real one soon, but the way finances are right now...

[Hey yeah, that's just a mana construct, not real fabric. No wonder it fits and looks so good.]

Oh! It's a barrier jacket. It does look nice, but did they really not give you enough money for clothes?

Well, there was money, but I spent most of it on uniforms that fit well and stuff like that. I asked about getting one of these made, but they said it would take about a month and that some of the materials would be expensive. And given the choice between a dress I might wear once a month and a pair of bespoke shoes I can wear for the next 20 years, I went for the shoes.

Um...magical outfit, I guess.

And I see...you did get clothes, just not ones as nice as this. That makes sense.

You're going to freeze to death wearing that.

[It probably didn't help that Vaati, who stood in a doorframe leading outside, was sending gusts of air swirling around him. But hey, he was a wind mage. He wasn't about to let his skills get rusty here just because of some weird girl in a frilly dress.]

Not for a few weeks at least. And I've been colder before.

[No, it didn't help. But oddly, her skirts do not billow properly-magical winds deaden and slow around her dress, as if it was protecting her from them with magic of it's own.]

[Wait, did his wind magic just....stop? He frowned, flicking his wrists again and sending out another small gale, but it just completely died the minute it neared her.

That hadn't happened before, but he hid his surprise with an intensified scowl.]

I'm sure you have.

It is a bit uncomfortable though. I suppose I will have to bundle up come winter. This place doesn't seem conducive to my normal habits of dress.

[Mir smiles softly and smoothed her dress with satisfaction as he throws another gale at her to die. Pure Ritual was one of her most powerful garments-the fact that it did all it's workings subtly was pleasing. After all, it was a source of confusion.]

[How was she doing that? He couldn't see her doing any obvious magic, and he didn't sense her using any non-verbal spells, which he'd seen a few of the older students try. He'd given up on his wind magic, and instead decided to stare intently at Mir.

Wait....

It was the outfit, of all things.]

You know, a lot of people here can stop simple spells, but you don't see them needing a dress to do it.

I don't need the dress either. But it lightens my own workload-I've actually found battle boring while I wear this one. And besides, it has a certain style, doesn't it?

[Twirling to lift the skirts slightly, and she's seemingly unaware of just how much thigh is visible through it. Or maybe that's part of the trolling...]

*Nanoha was a bit busy outside, but she wasn't really focusing much on the school assignments here right now.

She had something a bit more... different in mind. She didn't want her normal skills to get weaker because she was trying to learn a new form of magic.

Which was why she was standing, her eyes closed as a pink ball of magic zoomed around her, hitting a ball up into the air.*

*If Mir had been paying enough attention, she might've noticed that the counting each time that Nanoha's ball of magic hit the ball was coming from something that looked like a jewel on her neck.*

*Mir isn't out to interrupt Nanoha, but she does approach the girl, watching with practiced eyes as that ball bounced from the repeated impacts. Some sort of coordination exercise? Or is it endurance? And just what is that that is doing the accounting of hits?

Unconsciously however, she might be giving Nanoha a helping hand. Pure Ritual isn't her most powerful of combat outfits-and it looks pretty silly in a fight, she would agree. But her plain white dress has a rather unusual effect on other people-it smooths magic out, makes it easier to use, and generally is emitting fields of harmonious mana. And she only needs to humm a bit in order to keep it's inherent magic going.*

*Well, you were going to find out soon enough Mir, as Nanoha starts to blink as she realizes that something isn't exactly right, though she's not going to stop the ball of magic just yet.

[335. 336. 337.]

*Nanoha's going to just wait, and see how much longer this is going to go before checking to see if she should investigate what was going on.*

*Mir is a bit closer now-maybe Nanoha can actually here the hummming? Or maybe she can sense Pure Ritual itself-it's a heck of a lot like a barrier jacket, made of magic and designed to deflect damage with both passive and active measures. Though, it's real strength was the harmonic reinforcement it was providing.

Still, at this point, something was providing a noticeable easing of the burden of casting like Nanoha was doing.*

*Okay. This was definitely far too easy now. Nanoha sighed, letting the ball of magic stop, which had the ball drop to the ground and rest there.*

*Nanoha turns to look over at Mir, a small frown on her face.*

It is clothing from home. Although I didn't pack anything before arriving honestly, it was my casual outfit for the day.

Ahh. So you actually attend a school like that? Back home, such things don't exist outside of fiction anymore. But those outfits remain popular in such works.

It is a private school for girls, but there are a lot of schools on our campus, including the University and the technical schools as well as the elementaries.

What seriously? Whoa, talk about a big campus. I would guess that a place like that would have all kinds of stories to tell. Even more than this place. I mean, its just a warren of old and disused passages in here.
