Outsider Sorting Ceremony

After Monday's announcement that Hogwarts would play host to several Outsiders, the school was a hub of gossip, and the break-in of Sirius Black during the Hallowe'en Feast had almost been forgotten. Everywhere you went, there were people talking about the Outsiders in hushed voices, almost as though it was forbidden. Many of the rumours sounded ridiculous - apparently, Outsiders could throw houses, fly without aid, and turn invisible at will. Some students would try to discredit the rumours by explaining how such things were impossible, but it was to little avail.

Saturday was the day Hogwarts would open its doors to Outsiders, through a small Sorting Ceremony. It wasn't expected to be a large event, as reports indicated only a few Outsiders had accepted the offer, but it still seemed as though the entire school came to the Great Hall for the feast that evening.

The Great Hall was laid out the same way as the start of any Sorting Ceremony, though the tattered, frayed Sorting Hat had already been placed on the stool that stood before the staff table. The Outsiders - a mere four of them - were already present, lined up near the Sorting Hat.

Once all students and staff had arrived, Professor Dumbledore stood, raising a hand to quell the chatter and noise. Once all but a few quiet murmurs had ended, he addressed the school.

"Today," he said, "we welcome four new students into our school. I am sure you are all aware of the circumstances that have brought them here, and ask only that you treat them the same as any other student in this school. They are here to learn, just as you are."

Some couldn't help but wonder how Dumbledore could expect this, when one of the four Outsiders didn't even look human.

"Our four new students will be placed in a suitable House in the same manner as our First Years were at the start of term. Their House will be their home for as long as they remain at Hogwarts.

"Professor McGonagall, if you please?"

And the Headmaster took his seat. Professor McGonagall stepped forward.

"When I call your name and year, you will wear the hat and sit on the stool. The Sorting Hat will select the most appropriate House. You will then seat yourself at that House's table."

Eying the boy's sleeve, Touma offered him a hand to shake.

"My name's Thomas H. Norstein; I'm a fourth year student here."

His house, he thought, should have been obvious from his uniform.

"I'm Link!" the other boy said, beaming as he shook Touma's hand. "I'm... third year, they said. I don't know how they decided that - this is the first time I've ever been to a school. I helped the teacher at Windfall Island's school a little, but that's all."

"It's by age," he explained. "You have to be eleven by the start of the school year to be in first year, so third years are at least thirteen. But you're not the only one who hasn't been to school before: A lot of students were homeschooled before Hogwarts."

Touma included himself in that, even if his own education had been rather accelerated.

Link nodded. Okay, he got that.

"And... are all schools here this big?" he wondered, changing the subject a little. "It's bigger than Outset Island!"

Touma shook his head, though his assessment was based more on driving past Muggle schools than actual experience.

"Hogwarts is supported by magic," he said. He suspected it was enchanted to grow with the student body, but there was nothing in the literature to support this.

Again, Link nodded. "Okay. Mrs Marie's school was only one room, so I was wondering."

Supported by magic, huh? Link wondered what magic could do to a building. He was familiar with the traps in the Forsaken Fortress, which was... kind of a castle. The Tower of the Gods and Hyrule Castle looked similar to this place, too.

"Do the statues come to life and chase you?" he asked.

Touma actually chuckled at that.

"I don't believe so," he replied. He hadn't read anything to those effects, nor seen it happen himself. "The portraits are alive and move around, but they can't leave their frames."

It was hard to tell whether Link was relieved or disappointed - in fact, he wasn't entirely sure himself. However, he convinced himself that it was a good thing. "Well, that's okay, then. Because I hate it when I try to move something, and then suddenly the statues grow spikes and chase me."

Okay, yes, it was less exciting that they wouldn't do that here, but it was still a good thing.

Touma sideeyed the boy curiously.

"Does this happen to you often?"

It was starting to sound like Link came from an equally, though differently magical world.

[identity profile] balladofgales.livejournal.com 2011-11-18 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah," Link answered, with a nod. "They were all over this one place I was exploring, and then I kept on running into them after that. Mostly in ancient-looking places, though, so they were really really old."

"You have an interest in history?"

It was a reason why Touma would explore somewhere, especially somewhere ancient-looking. His eyebrows were raised now.

[identity profile] balladofgales.livejournal.com 2011-11-18 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
"Not really," Link answered, truthfully. "Maybe a little, but I just went to these places to get stuff I needed." His fingers twitched as he started to go for his sword, but remembered that he didn't have it - it was hanging out with the rest of his 'luggage'.
youngnobelman: (what is this cake doing out in the rain?)

[personal profile] youngnobelman 2011-11-18 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
"I see," Touma said blankly. Did Link's world not have shops or something?

[identity profile] balladofgales.livejournal.com 2011-11-18 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"Stuff you couldn't get anywhere else," Link clarified. "I had to save my sister! So it was important."

[personal profile] youngnobelman 2011-11-19 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
Link had said the magic word that didn't require a wand.

"Ah, of course," Touma agreed. "I hope you saved her in the end."

[identity profile] balladofgales.livejournal.com 2011-11-21 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"I did!" Link answered, beaming. "My friend's crew helped, too - they made sure she made it home safe."
youngnobelman: (nice to meet you!)

[personal profile] youngnobelman 2011-11-22 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm glad to hear it," Touma said. He really was: If whatever magical accident had brought everyone here had left someone's sister in need of rescue, he would have tried to fix it himself.
